Guided Ultrasonic Testing (GUL)
Long-range ultrasonic screening for piping that is inaccessible, buried, insulated, or located in dense pipe racks.

What we deliver
Guided Wave Ultrasonics inspects long lengths of pipe from a single transducer collar by sending low-frequency ultrasonic waves along the pipe wall in both directions.
GUL is ideal for screening piping that is buried, insulated, located in pipe racks, or otherwise difficult to access. Anomalies identified by GUL are followed up with advanced UT for sizing and characterization.
Applicable to piping 2" through 36" in diameter and up to 250–275°F with special precautions. Approximately 2" clearance around the pipe is required for inflatable collars (4" for fixed rings). Typical inspection range varies by pipe condition: 200 ft or more on painted new pipe with no welded supports, 100–125 ft on 20–30 year old pipe with minor corrosion, and 75–100 ft on older pipe with welded supports.
Benefits
- Long-range coverage from a single inspection point
- Inspects pipe 2"–36" diameter, up to 250–275°F
- Reduced excavation and insulation removal
- Effective screening prior to advanced UT follow-up
- Faster decision-making for inspection prioritization
